「FORESTED VILLA」から車で15分ほどの所に「小国町中心地」があります。
人口7,000～8000人という名前通りの本当に小さな町です。町の80%が山林であり、その山林の75%が杉の人工林です。当然のことですが町の主な産業は、林業です。ジャージー牛の飼育も盛んで、濃厚なジャージーミルクを味わうことができます。

ゆうステーション
小国町に溢れる杉の木を使い、特殊なポールジョイントで三角形に組み合わせていく日本初の木造立体トラス構法を用いて、廃止になった国鉄宮原線の肥後小国駅跡地に建築された逆台形のユニークな外観を持つ情報発信基地です。
1階には特産物の販売所、2階にはツーリズム協会の事務局が置かれ、観光客など沢山の人たちに利用されています。駐車場わきには、ちょっと風変わりなアートを感じさせるトイレがあります。ぜひ使ってみてください。
国道212号と国道387号とが交差する要所にあり、山間の温泉地に向かうバスの発着場にもなっています。

鍋ケ滝
ゆうステーションから車で12分。地元の有志が滝までの歩道を整備、人の手を加えすぎない癒しの空間となっています。
滝の高さは9ｍ、長さ20mと落差よりも川幅が広いため優しい印象で、新緑の頃は特にその姿は美しいと言われています。そして滝の裏側に回る事が出来て裏から滝が望めるというのが人気の滝です。
毎年GW期間中には滝を裏側からライトアップするイベントを開催しています。

この小国町から日本の「細菌学の父」として知られた北里柴三郎が生まれました。
1890年、血清療法をジフテリアに応用し、同僚であったベーリングとともに論文を発表して第1回ノーベル生理学・医学賞の候補になりました。結果は同僚のベーリングのみが受賞しましたが、ペスト菌や破傷風の治療法を発見し、医学の発展に多大な貢献しました。

グレーと黒を主体にした独自の手法で表現し、「東洋の寡黙」と呼ばれて国際的にも評価の高い洋画家です。約500点の作品を収蔵する必見の展示棟は、小国特有の置き屋根式の蔵になっており、日本でも珍しい総畳敷きです。

江戸時代、小国の農民や商人に小国両神社内にあった神護寺は福銭貸し与えました。それにより沢山の人々が救われたといいます。

九州のほぼ真ん中に位置する「阿蘇くじゅう国立公園」の中に「FORESTED VILLA」はあります。阿蘇山、由布院、別府、高千穂などに行くための中継地として宿泊されています。
世界に誇る阿蘇のカルデラ、ラムサール条約により保護されている九重山群のタデ原湿原や別府に代表される数々の温泉群。総面積726.78平方キロメートルに及ぶ大自然、それが「阿蘇くじゅう国立公園」です。

涌蓋山（わいたさん）
「FORESTED VILLA」の目の前に広がる涌蓋山は約40万年～50万年前の噴火で誕生した、標高1499.5メートルの独立峰です。
その山容は円錐形のきれいな姿をしていることから熊本県側からは「小国富士」、大分県側からは「玖珠富士」と呼ばれ、自然豊かな九州において百名山の一つです。
標高の割には周囲に遮るものがないので、緩やかな草原の広がる山頂からは360度の素晴らしい大展望、九重連山、阿蘇山、由布岳、そして天気の良い日には祖母山（宮崎県）、雲仙岳（長崎県）まで見ることができます。周辺には日本有数の地熱を利用した発電所があり、当然のごとく多数の温泉が湧出しており、世界各地から雄大な自然を楽しみに沢山の人たちが訪れています。

阿蘇山
「FORESTED VILLA」から凡そ1時間ほどで「阿蘇」に到着します。
凡そ600万年前に始まったとされる火山活動は、阿蘇山のカルデラ内部、中央火口から今も止むことなく噴煙を上げ続けています。火山活動が平穏な時には、火口付近まで近づくことができますが、時に火山活動が活発になり、また有毒ガスが発生した場合には火口付近の立ち入りが禁止されます。
阿蘇山の南麓には、阿蘇の名水と言われる清水がいくつも湧き出しており、カルデラの中で生活する人々の命の源になっています。豊かに広がる草原、どこまでも澄んだ空気。人間と大自然とが調和してきた長い時間が紡いだ景観を心行くまで堪能したいものです。

九重連山
「FORESTED VILLA」から車で30分～40分も走ると九重連山の入口です。
九州本土最高峰の中岳（1791メートル）を中心に10数個の火山帯が東西13キロメートル、南北10キロメートルの範囲に広がっています。
山系への入り口には長者原、山懐には坊がツルの大きな湿原が広がり、ラムサール条約により蓼原湿原が保護されています。山野草の宝庫であり、ミヤマキリシマ、ツクシシャクナゲ、ツクシドウダン、コケモモ、マツムシソウ、リンドウなどが山中のあちらこちらに咲いています。

Nabegataki
It is 5 minutes by car from the Zenzo Sakamoto Art Museum. Local volunteers have improved the sidewalk to the waterfall, making it a healing space where people do not add too much hands.

Shibaburo Kitazato was born this Kinokuni-cho known as “Japanese father of bacteriology” in Japan.
In 1890, I applied serological therapy to diphtheria and presented a paper with my colleague Behring and became a candidate for the 1st Nobel Prize in physiology / medicine. Only the colleague Beering won the result, but discovered the treatment method of plague bacteria and tetanus and made a great contribution to the development of medicine.
The birthplace of this Kitasato Shibasaburo has been preserved and released as a memorial hall.

Mount Aso
You will arrive at “Aso” in approximately 1 hour from “FORESTED VILLA”.
